Voting Question: Do you think this is a nice name for my unborn son?

Noah Eli Starr Bryson I only want a simple opinion, I'd appreciate it if none of you insulted it to the extreme as there's several nice meanings behind it all. The tradition in my family is that I'm something like the 8th 'Elizabeth' in my mother's side of the family as it is my middle name. Elizabeth is my mother's name, her mother's name, her mother's name, my grandfather's mother's name etc and because I wasn't having a little girl, I wanted someone to respresent this. So I've chosen the male pronounced name 'Eli' instead. In a way, we also said it could represent my partner's grandmother called 'Elaine' too! ..I could wait until I have a little girl but I like Eli anyway :-) The meaning behind 'Starr' is that my partner has always called our bump, his 'little star' and I also wanted some sort of trait of him too, instead of his full name. Also, I researched and discovered it can be used as a unisex name. My boyfriend really wants to add it in though, considering he let me choose most of our little fella's name..I know it's quite feminine but I suppose he doesn't have to use it when he's older.. I know Bryson's a boy's name too so just to clear it up, it's my partner's surname! Your opinions?  more

Resolved Question: Alexandria, is a great name but what is the meaning?

Hello, I have looked at a few of the web sites that speak on the meanings, origins and history of names and can not find information for the name Alexandria other than the fact that it is the feminine version of Alexander ( the great) and the fact that the male version is English and it has been latinized from the Greek name Alexandros, which meant "defending men". That is all great, but what does the feminine version Alexandria mean????  more

Voting Question: What's making me so paranoid and anxious?

WARNING: Please regard my question if you don't believe in the paranormal or anything pertaining to 'spirits' and such. Also, if you don't think dreams have meanings, please don't waste your time answering my question. This all really started in August. I started hearing whispering (happened twice), seeing things (somewhat like visions; happened once) and met a strange man in my dream (he's always in them now.) The whispering was nothing significant. It's both coming from male voices; the first time, 'it' said 'right here', and the second time i didn't understand because it was so rushed, but I heard a slight laugh at the end. In the dreams, it was a guy named Fero Audon (Fero means 'to bring suffering and sorrow to' in Latin. Audon is something in France, a place, I mean. He doesn't really scare me, even though when he made it clear he'd be watching me. In another he told me not to be afraid of death. I don't think he wants me to fear him either, but he looks at me as though he's hurt. He's paper-pale and has extremely light blue eyes and deep purple, small lips. He's also scarily thin, and bald. The 'vision' was the scariest. It had a man named Lucifer, who I later found out was the Devil's name, which made it even worse. I'm only afraid of him. He's a very dark man who had a confused, frustrated, and resentful look to him, not to mention to his persona. I was immediately terrified of him, and he did some bad things to someone I loved. I didn't know who she was in real life, but for some reason I couldn't stop myself from crying hysterically for her..but that was the end of him. Now these days I hate being in the dark. I hate walking upstairs to face the barren room I must pass to get to or from my room. I get really hot, my stomach drops and my heart starts beating really fast. When I get to my room I'm breathing heavily for a little while, then it passes over. When I go up, I'm constantly looking behind me, and when I go down, I'm constantly looking up at the balcony. I don't know what's making me so paranoid. It not like I think Fero or Lucifer, or anything else I fear is in there, but it's like someone is watching me? It gets so irritable and makes me really anxious. I want to know how to stop it. I hate it so much. Someone please help. I'm only thirteen, and no, I'm not making it up. Trust me, I'm far too old to be trying to play 'make-believe' with a couple of strangers, though I'd understand if you'd approach this skeptically. Thanks in advance. Mike, your artificial concern amuses me. I'm not harmful to anyone. I'm actually pretty optimistic. It's just an internal-conflict that I'm trying to abandon, but I can't until I find the root of it. That's just the way I'm programmed, but I doubt very highly that I should be diagnosed that way. well that's the last time i go to wiki for a foriegn definition. however, i did see 'to bring or carry' but i also saw suffer or sorrow. but i believe your's is just as well. yes, i've asked a similar question to this in the past-actually, right as it was beginning, and no i haven't gotten very sufficient or helpful answers. i thought it would go away but it hasn't. and it's really starting to bug me. that's why i asked it again.  more

Resolved Question: Do you like girl’s name Lilith?

In the Hebrew mythology: When God created Adam, he was lonely, so God created Lilith from the same dust from which Adam was molded. But they quarrelled; Adam [the proverbial domineering male] wished to rule over Lilith. But Lilith [a militant feminist] was also proud and willful, claiming equality with Adam because she was created from the same dust. She left Adam and fled the Garden. God sent three angels in pursuit of Lilith. They caught her and ordered her to return to Adam. She refused, and said that she would henceforth weaken and kill little children, infants and babes. I love this name. I find it very beautiful and sophisticated. I also love the fact that it means "of the night" in Assyrian because I like the names that have meanings associated with night. On the other hand, the myth saying that the offspring of Adam and Lilith were the evil spirits of the world doesn't bother me at all. :-) I personally really like the sound of this name. It's simple, but very elegant. Soft, but strong. And the story behind it only serves to make the name more interesting. You could, perhaps, say that Lilith was the original feminist, as well as the first rebel. If that isn't a distinguished title to bear, then what is? my history is not wrong http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/1513/whats-the-story-on-lilith-adams-first-wife to change a name with an a u or l is wrong because its mispelled and I hate misspelled names There are legends that Adam had a wife before Eve who was named Lilith, but this is not found in the Bible. The legends vary significantly, but they all essentially agree that Lilith left Adam because she did not want to submit to him. According to the legends, Lilith was an evil, wicked woman who committed adultery with Satan and produced a race of evil creatures. None of this is true. There is no biblical basis whatsoever for these concepts. There is no one in the Bible named Lilith. The passage most often pointed to as evidence for Lilith is Isaiah 34:14, which in the NRSV reads, "there too Lilith shall repose." This is a poor translation. Every other major translation of the Bible reads something to the effect of "night creature" or "screech owl." Even if "demon monster named Lilith" was the proper translation of the Hebrew word, Adam is nowhere even hinted at in this passage or its context. Whatever the Lilith was, it is not given any connection whatsoever to Adam or Creation. ps I am not Christian so for me Bible is rubbish  more

Resolved Question: Japanese name translation/creation?

Okay, so I have a few made-up names that are Japanese sounding, but I'm not sure what they'd actually mean if they were put into a Japanese name (ie, what kanji would/could be used & what the characters would mean). They are (m = male, f = female): Turo (m) Tesuko (m) Tanika (f) Kohuren (m) Yamati (f) Kasai (f) (I know this really is a Japanese name, but I'd like to know what it means) I also need names that match the following meanings (or something close to it): -White Princess (f) - I've come up with Shirohime, but what are my other options, & what would be the best way I could mesh this (white &/or princess) with Mine (which I think means "a resolute protector")? -Happy/bright child/boy (m) I also need a couple weapon names with the following meanings: -Guardian Angel (or something close to it) -Royal Cat -Playful/Mischievous Fox/Nine-tailed Fox Thanks!  more

Resolved Question: Good name for terrier: Trevor, Dextor, or Kody?

Our family just brought home a Cairn Terrier (wheaten color) puppy last weekend, and are narrowing down our name selection. He's a smart, energetic dog, who loves to cuddle and has become my little shadow :). At the top of our list right now (along with their origins and meanings): Trevor - Irish - Noble character. Dexter - Latin - Clever. This male dog learns easily. Kody - "Cody" is Gaelic for "cushion"; this dog likes to lay on soft things Comments? Other suggestions? We'd like the name to actually mean something, and not just sound "cute."  more

just look at the last word Apache a Parisian gangster or thug (from the collective name Apache for several nations of Native Americans)[1] Bohemian a person with an unconventional artistic lifestyle (originally meaning an inhabitant of Bohemia; the secondary meaning may derive from an erroneous idea that the Roma people originate from Bohemia)[2] Not used as an insult in most circumstances. Bugger Synonymous with sodomite. From Middle English bougre, heretic, from Anglo-French bugre, from Medieval Latin Bulgarus, literally, Bulgarian; (from the association of Bulgaria with the Bogomils, who were accused of sodomy).[3] Cannibal used descriptively for any human consuming human flesh (originally meaning Carib, erroneously thought to be cannibals)[4] Cohee (U.S.) originally (mid-18th century) -- a Scots-Irish settler into the Virginia Piedmont; later (late 18th century) -- a term for backwoodsman; hick, or most severely "poor white trash", especially on the frontier or in the Appalachian area; still later (post Civil War) -- a self-referential indicating an independent backwoods small farmer in the Virginia/Carolina/Tennessee/Kentucky area.[5][6] Cretin a person of severely diminished mental capabilities (possibly from Alpine French dialect, originally meaning Christian)[7] Goth a crude person, lacking culture or refinement; a somewhat obsolete term, in this sense not in reference to the Goth subculture (from the East Germanic tribe that sacked Rome in 410)[8] Gyp a swindler; a racehorse owner; in Britain also a male servant at a college — from Gypsy, which in turn is derived from Egyptian) [2] [3] Hun barbarous or destructive person; was also in used in World War I as an ethnic slur for the Germans (from the confederation of Eurasian tribes that first appeared in Europe in the 4th century, leading to mass migrations of Germanic tribes westward, and established an empire extending into Europe in the 5th century, partially financed by the plundering of wealthy Roman cities)[9] To Jew recorded by Webster's Dictionary since at least 19th century in the meanings to cheat, to defraud, to swindle [10] Philistine a person who does not care about artistic and cultural values (from a people that inhabited Canaan when, according to the biblical account, the Israelites arrived)[11] Pygmy a person of diminished stature (possibly in reference to certain hunter-gatherer peoples, such as the Mbuti of Central Africa, sometimes grouped together under the term Pygmies, but that designation actually stems from the original meaning of pygmy as an unusually small person)[12] Tartar a violently ferocious person, a rather obsolete term (from the Mongolian nomadic tribe of Tatars that invaded Europe in the 13th century, later generalized to any Mongolian or Turkic invaders of Europe)[13] Thug a gangster or ruffian ready to use excessive violence (from the religious Indian Thuggee cult, alleged to practice robbery and murder by strangulation)[14] Tuckahoe (U.S.) originally (mid-18th century) - a member of the aristocratic and politically powerful class of plantation owners in tidewater Virginia in the mid-18th century (i.e. the "first families of Virginia"); later - anyone from low-country Virginia who was lazy, aristocratic, ineffectual, prideful, effete, etc.; still later (post Civil War) - a self-referential used by anyone whose cultural heritage included wealth, slave-holding, and a tidewater Virginia/Carolina lineage.[5][6] Vandal a person who willfully and maliciously destroys property (from the East Germanic tribe that sacked Rome in 455)[15] Normo (U.S.) a person (traditonally with a normal intelligence) who don't have any type of disability. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ethnic_group_names_used_as_insults i took this from Wikipeda  more

Resolved Question: What are the names of your children and why did you name them that particular name?

I have twins. One boy and one girl. My little girls name is Lolah Simone. I'm not generally one who takes the supposed meanings of names into account. I like pretty names that have sentimental value. Lolah was the name of an elderly woman who lived next door to my husbands family. She was a big influence in his life. He says she was just a really cool old lady and he grew up just loving that name. I picked the name Simone because it's the name my husbands grandmother picked for herself after she immigrated here from Africa. My son's name is Taye Scott. Taye is the name/nickname of one of my favorite male broadway actors. I also like short and simple names for boys. Scott is the name of my husbands best childhood friend who died from leukemia.  more

Ziva means: "bright, radient" in hebrew (we have 2 other dogs with strong name meanings: Zachary means God remembers (Zechariah is the original form, also hebrew) Sasha means defender of men (Sasha is a russian pet name for Alexander) So we like names with meanings but we don't necisarily mean to name them with a meaning. Anyways what do you think of the names I have picked out  more

Resolved Question: Baby names, why are some people so mean?

Hi! I just wanted to start off by introducing myself. I am a 27 year old mother of one, and 29 weeks pregnant with another girl! I am married, and have been for 5 1/2 years. I recently found Yahoo Answers in my search for the perfect baby name...it was so much easier with the first! I have met many wonderful people that have been very informative and helpful, and my husband and I, 100%, have found the name for our new daughter. My question is, in my quest, I have noticed that some people can be terribly mean in this section. I COMPLETELY understand that we all have different opinions. For example, I will state mine. I love unisex names. My first daughter is Kendal Rae, and our daughter-to-be, is named Addison Jane. I love girly names. I also love boys names, hoping that we may have one, one day! :-) But this is my opinion. I do not ever try to force my opinion on anybody. For example. Say someone asks, "I would like to name my son/daughter ______, what do you think?". I may respond with that's a pretty name, I'm not too fond of the name, I prefer that on a boy/girl, but that is far as I may go. I know we all have different tastes, and not everyone is going to agree with mine, and vise versa. Another example. Someone may ask "I just had a baby boy/girl and his/her name is _______. What do you think?". If I like it I will say so, if I don't, I don't answer the question because I don't want to take the joy away of the new mom and dad by making a comment about how they didn't chose the most appropriate name....in my opinion. I have come across people in this section who go on and on about what someone has, or wants to name their baby. They go on about it ends in "son" and that means, son of....I know that, you know that, almost everyone knows that, but that doesn't change our opinion on a name that we have grown to love for our child. For example: My name is Abigail, and one of the meanings is "father's joy". My mother and father have been divorced since I've been 8 months old, and I have never met him, but my mom loved the name, and Abigail I am. Olivia means "ruler of the elves"...which is silly! But most of us love that name, according to the top 10 charts. Madison, Addison. Some of us love these names, some of us don't. I have yet to come across a male Madison or Addison, yet some people mock these names terribly, making the mother or father of this child feel like they chose such a horrible name for their little girl. We also have names like Ashley, Leslie, Casey, all of which were traditional male names, that are now pretty much have completely transitioned to female names, yet in this day and age, we look at them as "girly names". I'm just wondering why people have to be so mean? I just want everyone to take a second look at what they type. This site is filled with hormonal mothers, and fathers, lol, that just want some honest opinions about a name they selected for their little bundle of joy's. I'm not saying we can't be honest, but lets understand that being rude, or ridiculing them, or telling them that they are "child abusers" for naming a little girl Madison, to me is just plain heartless. We need to think of their feelings too. And again, this is all in my opinion! Feel free to disagree! Just be a little nicer! Oh, and I also wanted to mention. There is ONE exception, and he goes by Slappy, Mr. Sunglasses, aka, TOP CONTRIBUTOR...sometimes he needs to be told that the name he chose just will not due!! lol!! Thanks for your time, and I will pick best answer for who can just explain why people have to be so rude! WOW! I'm not the only one that feels this way I see! I'm on my cell and I can't go back to see what the names of the people here that made certain comments, but you'll know who you are by what I say! I know exactly what is meant by crazy spellings of a name. There was someone on here once that wanted to name her son Alyeczyanyder pronounced Alexander...just to be different. And yes, names like Dweezil, Jermajesty, Inspektor Pilot....sometimes those people need a little harsher comment from making one of the biggest mistakes of their lives, and naming their child something like that. And I know EXACTLY who you are referring to when it comes to the Aubrey, and whole "you wish you had a boy" comment! To me that is just rude! If I hear them make that comment again, I may scream!!!! but...I guess we do have to take the good the bad and the ugly, when it comes to the internet! Thanks so far for all your awesome responses!  more

Resolved Question: Stupid dream or hidden meanings?

Okay, first let me say that I've been having alot of-what some might say-"psychic incounters" lately. I just turned thirteen, and that's when all the women in my family say they started having very intuitive vibes and vivid dreams. But here's my dream, and hopefully you can make sense of it. There was a first part to it, but I can't remember it thoroughly enough to explain it, so here's the second part. My mom, my friend (her name was either Danielle, Raven, Kim or Kiki. And I'm not friends with a Kim nor Kiki) and I believe two or three other people were watching a scary movie. It was really dark out and I remember looking out a big window (like the one we see through from upstairs that's above our front door) as I talked to one of them. I don't remember what I was saying though. The next day we went to something like a marathon. It was a bicycle type though. I was sitting in a Jeep by myself and next to me was a van with a disney world picture on it. On it said "This means alot to us. When you race you raise money, and that's why the Make A wish foundation is really upset when you don't finish!" Now may I remind you, the Jeep I was in had the passenger and drivers seat doors open. I was looking out the passengers seat side view mirror and saw the bikers coming toward me alot of them just passed by the side and I remember thinking "What if one of them jump in the car?" As I'm thinking this a young looking pale boy stopped and looked inside. He said Hi. I got out the car and walked toward the front and said "This is my friend (one of the names up there)'s car." But in reality, the car looked exactly like the kind my mom has. *In the dream, the view constantly changes from my own eyes to as if I'm a bystander watching myself.* He said okay and asked me if I could by him something. He runs through his hair and says he wants to have body. I said OH! He wants hair gel. All of a sudden, all the people I was watching a movie with come up and one of my friends ask "What's your name?" What he says sounds like a grunt, like someone has his mouth covered. We all giggled and my friends were saying how cute he was. We get in the car to get him hair gel and I look at him (bystander view now) and smile. He smiles back and we drive off..Now we're home. I'm in my room and I get on the computer (eye view) Some site I go to says "Menneson" with little hearts all over it and it's flashing. I click on it and up comes a video. The video is with the guy I just met and some girl, who I later called Madison, but her name was spelt "Menneson". They were having sex. I didn't think much of it, and scrolled down. At the bottom of the page it said "Fero Audon and Jasmine (My last name) have four kids together and have been married for two years." After I read it out loud I said "OH! So that was his name. Fero Audon." I then asked myself if we got a divorce. I went on Y! and asked if Fero Audon and Jasmine (Last Name) got a divorce, or are we still married. Then I woke up. What do you think it meant? I saw everything so vividly, so I really did think it was real. And the reason I asked is because last night I was laying on my left side thinking of a song, and it felt like a male voice whispered something in my right ear. I heard it fine, but he was talking too fast. I turned my head and the voice went away. What do you think all of this means? Please don't say I'm crazy/nuts/psycho cause psychic-ness runs in my family. Believe it or not, I don't care. Just answer accordingly please. If you had any encounters like this or vivid dreams that came true please help. Thanks in advance. The sex video seemed to be when he was older. He was still really pale, but he was now bald. I didn't see the girls face in the video though. And I just found out "Menneson" is a popular french last name and Fero means "I bring" in latin. Audon is an Electronics store in the UK.. Alright, the sex video was nothing like the things on the internet. It was like something from the grudge or the ring. everything had that black and white, pale vainy look to it. I didn't even think about it. I just looked at it and scrolled down. I wasn't shocked and I didn't find it pleasureable. It was just there, like some boring documentary. And I don't even like scary movies. And about the whisper; It sounded like "right here/right there" followed by something else. if it wasn't that, it sounded similar to that phrase. Sorry about all the details, but I'm trying to give as much information as possible. Another thing; Also, I do believe Fero had something like a foriegn accent; Russian maybe? The passage on the website stated hihs occupation, and I remember thinking he was very wealthy. Also when I first met him, he had a problem talking. Like instead of just asking for hair gel, I had to interpret what he was saying and doing with his hands (i.e, running hands through his hair, saying he wants more 'body in his hair') He really wasn't all that attractive when I first met him. But he seemed really sweet even though we barely talked. He had amazing eyes and nice hair. When he went bald I didn't even recognize him. His eyes were big and blue, and looked like they were about to pop out of his head. If I was phased by the video I think I would've been scared. Audon is a commune in the Landes department in Aquitaine in southwestern France.. So far alot about this guy I met has to do with Latin and French.  more

Resolved Question: I have named my new born male baby as KASHISH (pronounced as Kaashish) NAIR.

Resolved Question: Suggestions for symbolic names of characters in a story?

I get really picky about names for my characters; and in this particular story I feel the urge to make sure most of the significant character's names have a symbolic name that sort of represents the character or their archetype; and I've run into a few characters that I can't find good names for - so if you had any suggestions I'd be grateful. Historical/mythological references....tangible object symbolism...anything you have. Here are the characteristics or archetypes I'm having trouble with, and their respective genders: Provider/Caretaker (Male) Sentient/Guardian (Female) The Nihilist (Female) The commoner/sheep (Male & Female) The Totalitarian (Male - It might be relevant to know that this character has a selfless intention, but strict methods) The Aristocrat (Male) Last names, First Names, nick names or pseudonyms are all acceptable; the context is flexible for many of them. I should also mentioned commonly used names with appropriate meanings behind them are also up for suggestion.  more

Resolved Question: Muslims: What are your rules for choosing names for your children?

You know, Muslims should choose decent names for their children that wouldn't make them any embarresment, wouldn't offend them, or have inappropriate meanings. My rules (though I still have no kids!) are: - names of prophets and messengers (males) - names like abdullah, and abdurrahman (males) - names like mohammed and ahmed (males) - arabic names (males and females) - names that are written and read in english without any ambiguity (males and females) - names with nice and tender meanings in arabic (females) - unique names not found in my family and close relatives (males and females) I actually have chosen names for my sons and daughters (inshallah!) - males: ibraheem, mahmoud, abdullah, khaled - females: reem, hind, zainab, abeer So tell me what are your rules, what names you will pick for your children (or you've already chosen if you have any kids), and what you think of the names I've chosen? Thanks all Muslims  more
